Syria’s Transition, Part II: Legitimacy, Governance, and Ummatic Solidarity

Description

February Istanbul Meetup | Syria’s Transition, Part II: Legitimacy, Governance, and Ummatic Solidarity

As Syria’s post-revolutionary governance takes shape, a key question emerges: Should legitimacy be sought through a centralized nation-state model, or could a governance approach rooted in Ummatic solidarity offer a more viable path forward?
This discussion will explore whether Muslim networks, grassroots resilience, and regional cooperation can serve as an alternative to reliance on Western-led international systems. While conventional nation-state structures may promise stability, do they also risk reproducing authoritarianism under a new guise? Conversely, could a decentralized model empower local communities while fostering stronger transnational ties within the Umma?
Led by the Director of Sharq Academia, who has just returned from Syria after delivering multiple seminars, this session critically assessed the future of governance, legitimacy, and recognition in the Syrian context and beyond.
