The Senior Editor plays a leading role in shaping the editorial vision and output of the Institute. Working closely with the Head of Research, the Senior Editor oversees the development, editing, review, and publication of research papers, guest submissions, articles, essays, and reports. They are responsible for upholding academic and stylistic standards, supporting contributors through the editorial process, and helping to grow the Institute’s intellectual voice and impact. The ideal candidate brings both editorial acumen and a strong grasp of academic writing in the humanities, as well as a strong command of Arabic and familiarity with Islamic shar’ī discourse. The role also requires attention to detail, good time-management skills, and an ummatic commitment to advancing ideas that strengthen the global Muslim intellectual and political discourse.
Time Commitment
The role begins at 15-20 hours per month, with the aim of moving to 25+ hours per month within 3-6 months, and potentially full-time within 1 year.
Role starts immediately (from late May 2025). First two months probationary.

Required Qualifications
Strong command of English and good command of Arabic. Other ummatic languages are a plus.
PhD qualification in a relevant field of the humanities, such as Political Science, Islamic Studies, Anthropology, History, Philosophy, or related disciplines.
Demonstrated experience in editorial or publishing roles
Excellent writing, editing, and critical thinking skills, especially in academic or semi-academic contexts
Familiarity with shar’ī ulūm and humanities or social sciences
Strong organisational and leadership abilities, with experience managing editorial workflows and teams
Familiarity with publication platforms, citation standards (Chicago preferred), and style guides
Commitment to the mission and vision of Ummatics Institute
Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects with competing deadlines
Responsibilities
Lead the editorial process from submission to publication, including review, revision, copy-editing, and final approval
Collaborate with researchers and contributors to shape content, refine arguments, and ensure clarity, coherence, and ummatic relevance and value
Maintain a consistent editorial style and voice across the Institute’s publications, ensuring alignment with its mission and intellectual ethos
Supervise junior editorial staff, including editorial assistants and proofreaders
Contribute to strategic planning of publication series and thematic outputs
Coordinate with design and communications teams for publication layout, branding, and distribution
Manage the editorial calendar and help prioritize projects in alignment with institutional goals
Ensure academic rigour, editorial quality, and stylistic consistency across all outputs
Participate in regular research meetings and contribute to institutional development, including reviewing internal policy and editorial frameworks
